When K-12 has been applied to Education System of the Philippines many people has been shocked to the way it is being implemented. The implementation of K-to-12 directly affects parents, who must pay two additional years in tuition for their kids to graduate. Nevertheless, most seem to think it is worth it if their children get a better education and are willing to make the sacrifice for them. There are too many controversies and praises that hound this new law, however, many schools in the country have to buckle up to cope with the demands as they have already been competing globally even before the passage of the law. And in order to meet the global demands, the schools have to face the challenges that come with the K to 12 program implementation. The additional two years after fourth year high school are intended to further hone the skills and talents of students for their chosen career path in arts and sports, technical vocational, entrepreneurship or tertiary education
A majority of students, parents and teachers support the new K-to-12 education system as they believe it will help graduates to be better prepared for college or joining the workforce. Pupils are now starting to accept this reality that they are facing. Teachers are now practicing this different kind of teaching; and parents are just following the flow of their lives when it comes to supporting their children for education as a part of their responsibilities and wishes for their children’s future. If we will just understand this new curriculum we will noticed that this has a lot of advantages especially for parents and families. Service-learning programs can offer parents and families the opportunity to participate in innovative learning experiences, and to become engaged in their children's schools in unique ways. K-12 in other countries has demonstrated that strong family involvement has numerous benefits for children and youth, including: Higher grades and test scores; Better school attendance; Greater completion of homework; Demonstration of more positive attitudes and behavior; and higher graduation rates. In addition, parents who are involved in their children's education show that they value learning and good character, set high expectations, stay informed about their children's progress, and monitor their children's activities. Research shows that when parents maintain strong relationships with their children's schools, the parents develop: A greater appreciation of their role in their children's education; an improved sense of self-worth; stronger social networks; and a greater understanding about their schools and teaching and learning activities in general. Service-learning programs can benefit parents by providing them with unique ways of communicating with and understanding their children while also developing their skills as leaders and advocates in their schools and communities In some cases, parents may even be the recipients of service-learning program activities such as computer training, literacy instruction, etc. Parents also can be a valuable resource for service-learning programs. Tasks they can perform include providing transportation to service sites, helping with fundraising or public relations, planning the program, connecting schools with service sites in the community, and serving as mentors to youth involved in service programs. They can also be volunteer service-learning coordinators.
An enhancement in the curriculum is always a good addition for education. However, we still need to look into how we will be implementing it. In our system right now the students are given quite a lot of curriculum, but the additional two years will be beneficial for them in terms of more things to learn and topics they can cover. Some may be apprehensive because of the changes that will happen, but many more are open about it, and eager to consider what may be added with this enhanced curriculum. Whatever this may affect to all it is still important to have an understanding parental involvement as a developmental phenomenon. Research is needed to understand the most appropriate forms of involvement given students' age and maturation. Schools need to understand how parent-involvement activities can help students and families successfully transition from one level of schooling to another. In order to have a good result of this K-12 education parents, students and teacher must participate for the student’s future.
